See, I knew that a trip to Fayetteville could be dangerous.

Arkansas was playing at home, the Razorbacks had every reason to approach the matchup with urgency, and the Volunteers could hardly afford a damaging SEC defeat with the conference championship race beginning to take shape.
Tennessee survived the challenge, defeating Arkansas 24–17 in a game that required persistence rather than overwhelming offensive production.
The seven-point margin reflected the difficulty of the assignment.
Unlike some of the weekend’s higher-scoring SEC contests, Tennessee’s victory was built around doing enough to remain ahead while preventing Arkansas from producing the late breakthrough it needed.
The Volunteers entered the game nationally ranked and carrying significant expectations. Winning games like this is essential for a program hoping to compete near the top of the conference standings.
Arkansas, meanwhile, had an opportunity to generate momentum with a home victory over a ranked opponent.
The Razorbacks scored 17 points and remained within one possession, but they couldn’t find the additional touchdown necessary to force a tie.
That will be particularly frustrating for Arkansas supporters.
Close losses are difficult enough. Close losses at home against conference opponents carry additional consequences because every SEC victory matters in the standings.
For Tennessee, the result offered a reminder that championship contenders cannot expect every game to resemble an offensive showcase.
Sometimes the challenge is simply to win on the road when the opponent is determined, the atmosphere is difficult, and neither team can establish complete control.
The Volunteers accomplished that objective.
Their 24-point total was enough to secure the victory, but the narrow margin also suggests areas that deserve attention before Tennessee faces stronger opposition.
The offense will need to produce more consistently against teams capable of scoring quickly. Tennessee cannot always expect to win conference games while leaving its opponent within a touchdown.
Defensively, however, holding Arkansas to 17 points provided the foundation for success.
The Razorbacks will look at the final score and recognize how little separated them from a potentially important victory.
But the SEC rarely rewards teams for being competitive without finishing the job.
Arkansas needs to turn promising stretches into complete performances. That means converting scoring opportunities, avoiding damaging mistakes, and finding ways to execute during the decisive moments of close games.
Tennessee can leave Fayetteville satisfied with the result, even if the performance was not spectacular.
The Volunteers earned another conference victory and avoided the kind of upset that can dramatically alter a season.
And with Alabama coming to Knoxville next Saturday, Tennessee has little time to celebrate.
The Volunteers’ next assignment will demand another level of performance.
Saturday’s victory kept Tennessee moving in the right direction.
The challenge now is to build upon it.
The SEC picture after Week 6
The weekend’s biggest development was Georgia’s victory over Alabama, which helped the Bulldogs climb to No. 1 in the Associated Press poll. Oklahoma’s upset of Texas, Kentucky’s overtime win over LSU, and South Carolina’s victory at Florida also reshaped the conference picture.
For Vanderbilt, the challenge is recovering from a difficult defeat before Arkansas visits Nashville. Tennessee and Alabama are headed toward another important rivalry game, while Missouri travels to Ole Miss in a matchup between nationally ranked opponents.
