Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon couldn’t have scripted a much better collegiate debut.

Brandon accounted for five touchdowns—three passing and two rushing—as No. 20 Tennessee overwhelmed Furman 56-9 at Neyland Stadium. He became the first true freshman to start a Tennessee season opener at quarterback since Brent Schaeffer in 2004.
Brandon threw for 226 yards while demonstrating the athletic ability that made him one of the nation’s most celebrated quarterback prospects.
Receiver Mike Matthews supplied the biggest plays through the air, finishing with 132 receiving yards and two touchdowns on only four catches.
Tennessee amassed 638 total yards, overwhelming Furman with both speed and depth. The Volunteers scored 21 points in the second quarter and another 21 in the third, turning a competitive opening period into a rout.
Furman’s Isaiah Davis did rush for 113 yards on eight carries, something Tennessee’s defensive staff will examine. Overall, however, the Paladins produced only 221 yards.
The story was Brandon.
Starting a true freshman at quarterback always carries risk, particularly in the SEC. Tennessee needs Brandon to make rapid progress before conference defenses begin disguising coverages and bringing more sophisticated pressure.
His first performance suggests he may be capable of handling it.
He displayed accuracy, running ability and—perhaps most importantly—composure. The stage never appeared too large.
Furman obviously isn’t an SEC defense, and Brandon will encounter much more difficult situations ahead. But quarterbacks cannot control the schedule; they can only take advantage of the opportunities presented.
Brandon certainly did that.
Tennessee entered Week 1 wondering how quickly its freshman quarterback would develop. After five touchdowns in his debut, that concern has been replaced by considerable excitement.
