Saturday in what could become a dangerous trap game if the Longhorns are already thinking about their much larger showdown with Ohio State the following week. That possibility has been one of the major themes surrounding this matchup.
Texas State has developed into a program capable of producing offense and should not be dismissed simply because of the difference in conference affiliation. The Bobcats’ goal will be to create tempo, force Texas defenders to make tackles in space and manufacture enough explosive plays to keep pressure on the Longhorns.
Texas, however, owns the decisive advantage in overall talent. The Longhorns should be stronger up front and deeper at almost every position. Several Texas players also improved their standing during fall camp, increasing the competition for meaningful snaps.
The biggest challenge for Texas may simply be maintaining concentration. If the Longhorns play patiently, run the football effectively and avoid turnovers, Texas State will have difficulty keeping pace. Texas should also be able to wear down the Bobcats defensively as the game progresses.
Texas State may score enough to keep the contest entertaining for a while. The Bobcats are unlikely to simply line up conservatively and hope to survive. But once Texas begins generating pressure and forcing longer-yardage situations, the Longhorns’ defensive talent should take over.
Expect a competitive first quarter followed by Texas steadily creating separation.
