Game Review: No. 1 Texas 20, No. 14 Tennessee 17

Longhorns

Nine games involved SEC teams Saturday, including seven conference matchups and two nonconference games. The SEC’s official results confirm all nine finals.

No. 1 Texas 20, No. 14 Tennessee 17

Texas escaped Neyland Stadium with a hard-earned 20-17 victory in a game that remained unsettled until the final seconds. The Longhorns didn’t overwhelm Tennessee offensively—they finished with only 262 yards—but did enough early to establish a lead and then survived a furious Volunteer finish.

Arch Manning completed 14 of 19 passes for 201 yards. Raleek Brown supplied the touchdowns, scoring twice on the ground while rushing for 67 yards. Texas led 10-3 at halftime and 13-10 entering the fourth quarter before Brown’s second touchdown made it 20-10.

Tennessee refused to go quietly. Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon connected with Mike Matthews for a 30-yard touchdown with 1:27 remaining, cutting the deficit to three. The Volunteers then recovered the ensuing onside kick, giving Neyland Stadium one final burst of hope. Tennessee advanced into Texas territory but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Volunteer defense deserves credit. Tennessee ran 76 plays to Texas’ 55 and possessed the ball for more than 31 minutes. The problem was efficiency: Tennessee averaged only 2.9 yards per play and managed 221 total yards. Brandon threw for 145 yards, while the Volunteers’ rushing attack struggled to generate consistent gains.

Texas wasn’t particularly clean—11 penalties for 115 yards and two turnovers could have been costly—but the Longhorns survived their first serious SEC road test of the season and improved to 4-0. Tennessee fell to 3-1 after coming tantalizingly close to knocking off the nation’s No. 1 team.
