Game Preview/Prediction: Texas at Mississippi State

Texas at Mississippi State

Texas returns to action Saturday night hoping to build on one of its most important victories of the season when Mississippi State visits Austin for a Southeastern Conference showdown.

The 11th-ranked Longhorns enter the contest with a 5-2 overall record and a 2-2 SEC mark following their dramatic 34-27 victory over Ole Miss.

Mississippi State, meanwhile, is 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play after falling 23-15 to Oklahoma.

For Texas, the challenge is maintaining the intensity that helped the Longhorns defeat a highly ranked opponent last weekend. For Mississippi State, the objective is finding a way to reverse a three-game losing streak.

Quarterback Arch Manning enters the contest following an eventful performance against Ole Miss.

Manning helped Texas build a commanding 24-3 halftime advantage before the Rebels staged a remarkable comeback. Ole Miss eventually tied the contest at 24, but Manning responded with a crucial fourth-quarter rushing touchdown to put the Longhorns ahead for good.

The victory was an encouraging development for a Texas offense that has experienced some frustrating stretches this season.

Manning demonstrated the ability to make important plays when the pressure increased. His combination of passing ability and mobility creates problems for opposing defenses, particularly when the Longhorns establish an effective running game.

Mississippi State will need to avoid allowing Manning to become comfortable early.

The Bulldogs’ defense must generate pressure without surrendering opportunities for the Texas quarterback to escape the pocket and create additional yardage.

Mississippi State’s performance against Oklahoma offered both encouraging and discouraging signs.

The Bulldogs remained competitive throughout much of the contest and were within eight points during the final minutes.

Unfortunately, a costly fumble near Oklahoma’s goal line prevented Mississippi State from capitalizing on a promising scoring opportunity. The Sooners subsequently drove 96 yards for a touchdown, turning what might have been a Mississippi State advantage into a significant deficit.

That sequence illustrates the challenges facing the Bulldogs.

Mississippi State has enough talent to compete with respectable SEC opponents, but mistakes in critical situations have repeatedly undermined its efforts.

Against Texas, those mistakes could prove even more costly.

The Longhorns possess an offense capable of scoring quickly, and giving Manning additional possessions would be particularly dangerous.

Mississippi State must establish a productive running attack to keep the Texas defense honest and prevent the Longhorns from concentrating exclusively on passing situations.

Sustaining long drives would also serve another purpose: keeping Manning and the Texas offense on the sideline.

The Bulldogs should resist the temptation to turn this into a wide-open scoring contest. Their best opportunity is a physical, deliberate game featuring effective rushing, strong third-down execution, and minimal turnovers.

Texas, on the other hand, should attempt to establish control early.

The Longhorns demonstrated against Ole Miss that they can generate substantial offensive production. However, their inability to protect a 21-point halftime lead raises questions about defensive consistency.

That issue deserves attention.

A team with Texas’ postseason ambitions cannot afford to surrender significant advantages against stronger opponents.

Mississippi State will certainly attempt to exploit those vulnerabilities, particularly if the Bulldogs can remain within striking distance entering the fourth quarter.

Nevertheless, Texas has the advantage in offensive firepower, quarterback play, and home-field conditions.

The Longhorns should be capable of controlling the line of scrimmage and gradually wearing down Mississippi State’s defense.

Expect the Bulldogs to compete hard early, but Texas should eventually pull away behind a productive performance from Manning and its offensive supporting cast.
