The Volunteers delivered one of their most significant performances of the season, using a strong defensive effort to frustrate the Crimson Tide and secure a victory that changed the SEC championship conversation. Now comes a different kind of challenge: maintaining that level of play on the road against South Carolina.
The danger for Tennessee is obvious. Beating Alabama creates excitement, national attention and the temptation to start looking ahead. South Carolina, however, has no interest in becoming a footnote to Tennessee’s celebration. The Gamecocks will have the benefit of their home crowd and an opportunity to disrupt a team that suddenly has much more to lose.
Tennessee’s defense deserves considerable credit for its performance against Alabama. Holding the Crimson Tide to 10 points required disciplined tackling, effective pressure and the ability to prevent promising possessions from turning into touchdowns. Repeating that performance against South Carolina would put the Volunteers in an excellent position.
The Volunteers must also produce a balanced offensive effort. Tennessee cannot simply assume its defense will hold every opponent to a modest point total. Establishing the running game, protecting the quarterback and finishing drives with touchdowns rather than field goals will be important.
South Carolina’s best opportunity may come from creating a physical contest. The Gamecocks need to challenge Tennessee at the line of scrimmage, limit rushing lanes and force the Volunteers into difficult third-down situations. If Tennessee becomes one-dimensional, South Carolina can devote more attention to disrupting the passing game.
The Gamecocks also need their offense to make the most of its opportunities. Tennessee’s defense will be confident after the Alabama victory, so South Carolina cannot afford a succession of empty possessions. Field position, third-down conversions and ball security will be critical.
Williams-Brice Stadium could play a significant role. South Carolina supporters are capable of creating an intimidating atmosphere, particularly when the Gamecocks produce an early defensive stop or explosive offensive play. Tennessee must be prepared to handle crowd noise and maintain its composure if the home team builds momentum.
Another interesting element is the pressure surrounding Tennessee’s improved national standing. The Volunteers climbed to No. 11 in the latest AP poll, reflecting the importance of their Alabama victory. That ranking brings expectations, and expectations can become a burden if a team starts playing cautiously.
I expect South Carolina to provide a difficult test. The Gamecocks should be especially motivated to knock off a ranked conference opponent, and a close first half would not surprise me.
Ultimately, Tennessee’s defensive performance last weekend was convincing enough to give the Volunteers the advantage. If they maintain that intensity and avoid turnovers, they should gradually take control.
Predicted score: Tennessee 30, South Carolina 23
