Texas has a little explaining to do after its 27–24 loss to Oklahoma.

The Longhorns entered the Red River showdown with considerable expectations, only to discover that turnovers and missed opportunities can erase a talent advantage in a hurry.

Florida arrives with problems of its own. South Carolina handed the Gators a 38–19 defeat last weekend, exposing defensive vulnerabilities that could prove costly against Texas.

For the Longhorns, the biggest priority is protecting the football. Quarterback Arch Manning cannot afford to give Florida extra possessions, particularly if the Gators manage to establish a running game and shorten the contest.

Florida needs to keep this game close into the fourth quarter. If the Gators fall behind by two touchdowns early, Texas has enough offensive weapons to make a comeback difficult.

I expect a more disciplined performance from the Longhorns, particularly at home. Florida will have opportunities, but Texas should control the second half.

Prediction: Texas 31, Florida 17
