Yes — I found two developments worth adding to our SEC watch list tonight.
Georgia — DT Xzavier McCloud has left the team and retired from football. McCloud’s departure removes a piece from Georgia’s defensive-line rotation immediately before the season opener. Given Georgia’s championship expectations, I consider the loss of a defensive tackle this close to Week 1 significant enough to flag, although it isn’t a season-altering blow by itself.
LSU — the NFL-player eligibility controversy has escalated considerably. Dae’Quan Wright and Junior Tuihalamaka are now practicing with LSU, while Thursday’s Louisiana court hearing will determine whether the SEC can enforce its new prohibition against players returning from professional football. Wright cannot play against Clemson Saturday because he must complete the NCAA’s seven-day acclimatization period, but Tuihalamaka’s situation could affect LSU more immediately. Reports also say coaches from other major conferences have discussed the possibility of refusing to play opponents who use former professional players.
One other notable development involves LSU’s opponent: Clemson officially named Christopher Vizzina its starting quarterback against LSU, beating out freshman Tait Reynolds. Dabo Swinney indicated Reynolds is still likely to play. That doesn’t change an SEC roster, but it matters directly to Saturday’s Clemson-LSU matchup.
I checked for comparable fresh developments across the rest of the SEC and didn’t find another one tonight that I’d classify as materially changing a team’s 2026 outlook.
