Florida begins the Jon Sumrall era against Florida Atlantic, and we now have a much clearer picture of the Gators’ opening lineup. Aaron Philo is the starting quarterback, with Jadan Baugh at running back and Dallas Wilson, Vernell Brown III and Eric Singleton Jr. among the starting receivers.
That group gives Florida substantial offensive potential. Philo does not need to force the ball downfield constantly; he has enough talent around him to distribute it and allow his playmakers to create yards after the catch.
Florida Atlantic’s best opportunity is to create uncertainty early. New coaching systems often experience first-game mistakes, and FAU needs to capitalize on every penalty, turnover or coverage breakdown. The Owls must also prevent Florida from building a dominant rushing attack.
Defensively, Florida appears capable of being particularly disruptive. The Gators’ opening depth chart includes talented front-seven players such as LJ McCray, Jeremiah McCloud, Miles Graham and Aaron Chiles. Florida should be able to create pressure without needing to blitz constantly.
Playing in the Swamp also presents a major challenge for FAU. If Florida scores early and the crowd becomes involved, communication becomes more difficult for the Owls.
The Gators may take a quarter to settle into Sumrall’s system, but their overall talent should eventually produce separation. This is an important first step for a Florida program trying to build momentum under a new staff.
