Alabama opens at Bryant-Denny Stadium against an East Carolina team capable of being more troublesome than a typical season-opening opponent. The Pirates have ambitions of contending in the American Conference and should arrive believing they can make Alabama uncomfortable if the Crimson Tide starts slowly.
The primary storyline is Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell, who was named the starter during August. This is an ideal first test for him: good enough opposition to force him to execute, but a game Alabama should still control with its superior talent. Alabama does not need Russell to produce a spectacular statistical performance. Protecting the football, making correct reads and getting the ball to Alabama’s playmakers should be enough.
East Carolina’s best chance is to pressure Russell, force Alabama into long-yardage situations and prevent the Tide from establishing an early rhythm. ECU cannot afford short fields created by turnovers or special-teams mistakes. If Alabama gets ahead by two touchdowns early, the Pirates will have difficulty playing from behind.
Defensively, Alabama should possess a clear advantage in speed and depth. East Carolina may manufacture some early success with quick throws and misdirection, but sustaining long scoring drives will be difficult.
This game should tell us more about Alabama’s offensive chemistry than its final score. The Tide may have a few opening-day mistakes, but by the second half their talent advantage should become obvious.
