South Carolina gets a favorable opening matchup against Kent State, and the Gamecocks should use the afternoon to establish their identity before SEC competition arrives. South Carolina has spent August sorting through its backfield and other offensive roles while building around quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who remains the centerpiece of the offense.
Sellers gives South Carolina an enormous advantage because of his ability to hurt opponents with both his arm and his legs. Kent State must remain disciplined with its pass rush; overpursuing Sellers could create running lanes and explosive plays outside the pocket.
The Gamecocks should also be able to lean on their offensive line and running game. If South Carolina consistently wins on first down, Kent State will have difficulty getting the defense off the field. This is also an opportunity for the Gamecocks to develop their receiver rotation and determine which players will become dependable options around Sellers.
Defensively, South Carolina should attack aggressively. Kent State must avoid turnovers and negative plays just to keep the game manageable. The Golden Flashes may produce an early scoring drive, particularly if South Carolina shows opening-game rust, but they will have difficulty matching the Gamecocks physically for four quarters.
South Carolina should be able to build a comfortable halftime lead and then use the second half to develop depth. The more important concern for the Gamecocks will be coming through the opener healthy.
