Oklahoma begins the 2026 season with a home game against UTEP, and the Sooners should enter as a substantial favorite. The biggest question is not whether Oklahoma has more talent, but how efficiently it operates in its first live action of the season. Oklahoma released its opening depth chart this week, giving the Sooners their first firm look at the rotations they plan to use against UTEP.
The Sooners should have a major advantage along both lines. Oklahoma’s defensive front has the size and athleticism to make UTEP uncomfortable in obvious passing situations, while the offense should be able to establish the running game early. That would allow Oklahoma to control possession and avoid forcing unnecessary throws.
UTEP’s best opportunity is to survive the opening quarter, avoid turnovers and turn the game into a slower, lower-possession contest. If the Miners can create a takeaway or two and prevent explosive plays, they could remain competitive into the second quarter. The problem is sustaining that formula for four quarters against SEC-caliber depth.
For Oklahoma, this game is also about refinement. The Sooners need clean quarterback play, reliable protection and a strong showing from their secondary before the schedule becomes considerably more difficult. Expect Oklahoma to rotate plenty of players after halftime if the score becomes one-sided.
UTEP may make the Sooners work early, but Oklahoma’s overall roster strength should eventually take control.
