The Commodores are 2–0 after defeating Austin Peay 28–9 and Delaware 35–26, but the nine-point victory over Delaware demonstrated that Vanderbilt still has plenty to clean up. NC State arrives after destroying Richmond 73–0.

This is the kind of game Vanderbilt needs to win if the Commodores intend to establish themselves as more than an improved SEC program. NC State brings Power Four personnel, confidence and enough athleticism to challenge Vanderbilt across the field. The Wolfpack will not be intimidated by playing an SEC opponent.

Vanderbilt’s biggest objective should be consistency. The Commodores cannot afford extended stretches of stalled possessions or defensive breakdowns. Against Delaware, Vanderbilt scored enough to survive, but allowing 26 points raised legitimate concerns heading into a considerably tougher matchup.

The home field could matter. Vanderbilt has an opportunity to establish control early and force NC State to chase the game. A balanced offensive attack will be important, as will protecting the football. Defensively, Vanderbilt needs to prevent explosive plays and make the Wolfpack assemble long scoring drives rather than surrendering easy points.

This looks like one of the more competitive games on the SEC schedule. NC State has enough talent to win in Nashville, and Vanderbilt will have to play considerably better than it did against Delaware.

The difference may come late. Vanderbilt’s growing confidence, home field and ability to make a few critical fourth-quarter plays should be enough to escape a close one.

Prediction: Vanderbilt 31, NC State 27
