Biggest Strength — Defensive Talent
Georgia’s defense remains the most dependable part of one of college football’s most dependable programs. Kirby Smart once again possesses elite talent at virtually every defensive level. PFF rates Georgia’s linebackers third nationally and its secondary among the country’s five best units, with safety KJ Bolden emerging as one of the stars. Georgia also placed 11 players on the preseason Coaches All-SEC teams, including defensive backs Ellis Robinson IV and Bolden on the first team. Smart’s recruiting has created the depth necessary to withstand injuries and NFL departures better than almost any program in America. Georgia doesn’t need every defender to become a superstar because the Bulldogs can rotate talented players and keep them fresh. That depth, speed and experience should make Georgia extremely difficult to sustain drives against. It is the primary reason the Bulldogs once again enter the season as the SEC favorite.
Biggest Weakness — Explosive Passing Plays
Georgia’s weakness is unusually specific: the Bulldogs need more explosive plays from their passing game. Gunner Stockton operates the offense efficiently, and Georgia can methodically move the football, but defenses have increasingly been able to force the Bulldogs to string together long drives. ESPN identifies big-play production as the issue separating recent Georgia teams from the national championship versions of 2021 and 2022. Receiver turnover adds to the concern in 2026. Georgia brought in Georgia Tech transfer Isiah Canion, while London Humphreys provides a returning deep threat, but the Bulldogs need someone to consistently stretch defenses vertically. Stockton doesn’t need to become a reckless gunslinger. Georgia simply needs enough 30-, 40- and 50-yard completions to punish opponents for crowding the line of scrimmage. Against elite playoff defenses, producing ten-play scoring drives repeatedly is difficult. Georgia needs the occasional quick strike.
