Oklahoma stunned top-ranked Texas 27–24 when kicker Tate Sandell connected on a 47-yard field goal as time expired, sending the Sooners into celebration and the Longhorns into an unexpected early-season crisis.

Texas arrived in Dallas carrying the nation’s No. 1 ranking and the expectations that accompany it. Oklahoma entered unranked, with questions surrounding its offense and the direction of the program. None of that mattered once the game began.

The Sooners played with the urgency of a team that understood the opportunity in front of them. Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer helped generate timely offensive production, while the defense made critical plays to prevent Texas from taking command.

One of those defensive moments came through an interception by Courtland Guillory, giving Oklahoma an important possession during the game’s decisive stretch.
Texas certainly had opportunities.

The Longhorns scored 24 points and remained within striking distance until the final seconds. But their inability to finish off Oklahoma left the door open for one of the biggest upsets of the season.

Sandell eventually walked through it.

His 47-yard field goal provided the winning margin and instantly transformed the atmosphere surrounding Oklahoma’s season. The Sooners had entered the contest needing a significant victory, and beating the country’s top-ranked team in Dallas certainly qualified.

For Oklahoma coach Brent Venables, the victory offered a much-needed response to criticism that had intensified following the team’s uneven start. A rivalry win can change the conversation around a program. A rivalry win over No. 1 Texas can change it overnight.

The result also carried consequences far beyond Dallas.

Texas had appeared positioned to remain among the leading contenders for the SEC championship and College Football Playoff. The defeat did not eliminate those ambitions, but it removed the margin for error that comes with an undefeated record.

Oklahoma, meanwhile, suddenly had a signature victory to build upon.

The Sooners demonstrated that rankings and preseason expectations offer little protection when two longtime rivals meet. Texas entered with the superior ranking, but Oklahoma executed when the outcome was hanging in the balance.
The final kick will be remembered for years by Sooners fans.

For Texas, the more important question is how quickly the Longhorns can recover.

The SEC championship race just became considerably more interesting.
