Predicted Score: Texas A&M 35, Kentucky 17
Actual Score: Kentucky 31, Texas A&M 21
Our prediction had Texas A&M winning comfortably, but the Wildcats completely reversed that expectation with a tremendous third quarter.
The teams went to halftime tied 7-7. Then Kentucky took over.
Quarterback Kenny Minchey connected with Kenny Darby for a 42-yard touchdown early in the third quarter. CJ Baxter followed with two rushing touchdowns, and suddenly Kentucky had exploded for 21 unanswered points and a 28-7 advantage.
Minchey was exceptionally efficient, completing 14 of 18 passes for 252 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Baxter carried 19 times for 87 yards and two scores, while DJ Miller supplied 96 receiving yards.
Texas A&M actually finished with more total offense, 423 yards to Kentucky’s 408, but the Aggies ran 84 plays compared with only 54 for the Wildcats. Kentucky averaged an impressive 7.6 yards per play and, critically, committed no turnovers. Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed threw two interceptions.
The Aggies mounted a fourth-quarter rally, cutting the deficit to 28-14 and later 31-21, but Kentucky never surrendered control. A 52-yard field goal helped the Wildcats maintain breathing room.
For Kentucky, this was much more than an upset. It was a road SEC victory over a Top-10 opponent and an early statement for coach Will Stein’s team.
For Texas A&M, the loss exposed how quickly turnovers and defensive breakdowns can change a game. The Aggies were predicted to win by 18; instead Kentucky won by 10 — a 28-point swing from the expected margin.
