Vanderbilt’s opener was unusual but successful. The Commodores defeated Austin Peay 28-9 in a game that ended with 2:16 remaining because of lightning.

Now Delaware visits FirstBank Stadium for another opportunity to develop the Commodores’ new-look offense.
The biggest storyline remains the quarterback position. Blaze Berlowitz opened the season as Vanderbilt’s starter, while highly regarded freshman Jared Curtis represents the future and should continue receiving opportunities as Clark Lea develops the position.
This is exactly the type of game Vanderbilt cannot take lightly. Delaware has moved into FBS football and will view a trip to Nashville as an opportunity to establish credibility against an SEC opponent. The Commodores need to take control at the line of scrimmage instead of allowing Delaware to believe an upset is possible.
Vanderbilt’s defense should have the advantage. Lea’s teams are generally disciplined, and the Commodores should be capable of making Delaware earn its yards rather than surrendering repeated explosive plays.
Offensively, I’d like to see Vanderbilt establish the running game early. That takes pressure off the quarterbacks and creates opportunities for play-action. It also allows Lea to control the clock and gradually wear down Delaware’s defensive front.
The Commodores shouldn’t need trickery or a shootout to win this one. Protect the football, win special teams, dominate the fourth quarter and move to 2-0.
There is also value in getting Curtis meaningful snaps if Vanderbilt establishes a comfortable lead. Every rep could become important later in the season.
Delaware may keep the score respectable for a while, but Vanderbilt has too much size and depth.
