This is the first SEC conference game of 2026, and it’s considerably more intriguing after the opening weekend.

Alabama beat East Carolina 48-10 and, perhaps most encouragingly, rushed for 227 yards and five touchdowns. Keelon Russell led the Crimson Tide with 86 rushing yards, while Alabama’s defense held ECU to only two rushing yards.
Kentucky also looked impressive in Will Stein’s coaching debut, defeating Youngstown State 45-13. Notre Dame transfer Kenny Minchey threw for 301 yards and four touchdowns, while the Wildcats rushed for 205 yards.
Now both teams discover how much of Week 1 was real.
Russell faces his first true road start, and Stein has openly challenged Kentucky fans to make Kroger Field extraordinarily loud. Alabama has gone only 6-5 in true road games during Kalen DeBoer’s first two seasons, making the environment a legitimate factor.
Kentucky’s problem is Alabama’s balance. If the Wildcats concentrate on Russell, Daniel Hill and freshman EJ Crowell can attack on the ground. If Kentucky crowds the line, Russell has the arm and receiving talent to punish single coverage.
Minchey gives Kentucky a legitimate chance to keep this interesting. Stein’s motion, formations and offensive creativity should test Alabama much more severely than ECU did.
I expect Kentucky to land a couple of punches and make Alabama uncomfortable into the second half. But Alabama’s defensive speed and offensive depth should eventually become decisive. Russell doesn’t need to be spectacular; he needs to protect the football and let Alabama’s superior roster work.
