Tennessee begins the year at Neyland Stadium against Furman, giving Josh Heupel’s team an opportunity to establish offensive rhythm before facing more demanding opponents. One important piece of good news for Tennessee is that tight end Ethan Davis has been cleared to play after dealing with a lower-body injury during fall camp.
The Volunteers’ offense should immediately test Furman vertically. Tennessee wants tempo, space and explosive plays, and an opener against an FCS opponent provides the opportunity to experiment without abandoning the basic structure of the offense.
Furman’s best strategy is to slow the game down. The Paladins need first downs, possession time and long drives that keep Tennessee’s offense on the sideline. Three-and-outs will be especially damaging because Tennessee can score quickly once it establishes momentum.
Defensively, the Volunteers should have a major advantage in speed. Furman may have some early success through misdirection or play-action, but Tennessee should eventually force the Paladins into obvious passing situations.
The biggest goal for Heupel will be getting productive snaps for the first-team offense and then creating opportunities for younger players. Tennessee does not need to reveal everything schematically. It simply needs to play clean football and avoid injuries.
Furman is capable of being disciplined and competitive, but the talent difference is considerable. Once Tennessee’s pace starts creating fatigue, the margin should grow quickly.
