SEC Football Update — August 26, 2026 — 12:55 AM CT
There are three significant developments since the previous update.
Vanderbilt has chosen its starting quarterback. Vanderbilt Commodores football will start senior Blaze Berlowitz rather than five-star true freshman Jared Curtis against Austin Peay on September 5. Berlowitz will be making his first career start. Curtis is expected to play as well, so the competition may not be completely over, but this is an important decision for Vanderbilt as it replaces Diego Pavia.
The SEC has blocked LSU’s planned additions of former NFL players. This is a major reversal from yesterday’s LSU development. The conference adopted a rule barring players with professional experience from returning to compete at SEC schools. That directly affects LSU Tigers football and Lane Kiffin’s attempt to add former Ole Miss defensive lineman Zxavian Harris and tight end Dae’Quan Wright after their NFL stints. As things stand, LSU will not receive the late-season roster boost we discussed in the previous update.
Tennessee received good news on Arion Carter. The NCAA reduced the standout linebacker’s suspension from two games to one. Carter will still miss the September 5 opener against Furman, but he will now be eligible for the much more important September 12 game against Georgia Tech. Carter led the SEC in tackles per game last season, so getting him back one week earlier materially improves Tennessee’s outlook for that matchup.
