The Longhorns now must avoid an emotional letdown against unbeaten UTSA.
Texas rallied in the fourth quarter against Ohio State, with Arch Manning helping lead the winning drive in a game that immediately strengthened the Longhorns’ national championship credentials.
UTSA, however, arrives at 2–0 after defeating Texas State 31–26. The Roadrunners have enough offensive ability to punish Texas if the Longhorns spend too much time celebrating last week’s victory.
The first quarter will tell plenty. Texas needs to establish its physical advantage immediately, particularly along the line of scrimmage. If the Longhorns run effectively and prevent UTSA from generating explosive plays, the talent difference should become obvious.
For UTSA, the formula is straightforward but difficult: protect the football, create a few big plays and remain within striking distance into the second half. Falling behind by several touchdowns would allow Texas to dictate every aspect of the game.
This also provides Manning and the Texas offense an opportunity to become more consistent. The Longhorns demonstrated resilience against Ohio State, but championship teams must also dominate opponents they are expected to beat.
UTSA should provide enough resistance to keep Texas focused, but the Longhorns have too much talent on both sides of the ball. After perhaps a competitive opening quarter, Texas should steadily pull away.
Prediction: Texas 42, UTSA 14
