The best and worst of Texas football entering the 2026 season.

Longhorns

16powers.com takes a look at each SEC team’s biggest strength and biggest weakness heading into the 2026 season. In this segment we’ll look at the Texas Longhorns.

Texas Longhorns

Biggest Strength — Overall Offensive Firepower

Texas may possess the SEC’s most complete collection of offensive talent. PFF ranks the Longhorns’ offense second nationally, with Arch Manning returning at quarterback and transfer receiver Cam Coleman joining an already talented group. Texas also grades highly at running back, receiver and offensive line, giving Steve Sarkisian tremendous flexibility in how he attacks opponents. Defenses cannot devote all their attention to Manning because Texas can run the football and create mismatches outside. Sarkisian is also one of college football’s best play designers, particularly when he can dictate personnel matchups. With Manning’s experience and the talent surrounding him, Texas should be capable of attacking defenses horizontally, vertically and between the tackles. Few teams have fewer obvious offensive limitations.

Biggest Weakness — Turning Talent into Consistent Production

Texas’ weakness is not a lack of talent but the need to turn its extraordinary offensive potential into consistent results. The Longhorns finished only 30th in offensive SP+ last season despite possessing one of the nation’s most talented rosters. That gap between ability and production ultimately helped keep Texas out of the playoff. Manning and the offense cannot afford prolonged stretches in which drives stall despite favorable matchups. The arrival of Coleman and other additions raises the ceiling, but it also raises expectations. Texas will see too many excellent SEC defenses to survive on potential alone. The Longhorns need their highly regarded offense to become as productive statistically as it appears on paper. Until that happens, the difference between Texas being merely very good and becoming a national championship team remains offensive consistency.
