Biggest Strength — Up-Tempo Offense
Mississippi State’s offense finally began showing signs in 2025 of becoming what Jeff Lebby envisioned. After ranking 82nd in offensive SP+ in 2024, the Bulldogs jumped all the way to 39th last season. That improvement is significant because Lebby’s up-tempo system depends on rhythm, spacing and forcing defenses to make rapid decisions. Mississippi State came painfully close to upsetting Tennessee, Florida and Texas, showing that the offense could create problems even against more talented opponents. Entering Lebby’s third season, players should have a better understanding of the system and the pace at which he wants to operate. Mississippi State probably won’t possess the SEC’s deepest roster, so offensive tempo provides an equalizer. If the Bulldogs can create explosive plays and force opponents into high-scoring games, they become dangerous—particularly at home.
Biggest Weakness — Defense
The defense remains Mississippi State’s biggest obstacle. While the offense made substantial progress last season, the defense never experienced a comparable breakthrough. That was a major reason a promising 4-0 start deteriorated into a 1-8 finish. Playing fast offensively can also place additional pressure on a struggling defense because unsuccessful possessions return the defense to the field quickly. In the SEC, that can become exhausting against teams with powerful offensive lines and deep running-back rotations. Mississippi State doesn’t necessarily need an elite defense to reach a bowl game, but it cannot repeatedly require its offense to score into the 30s simply to have a chance. The Bulldogs need to become more reliable on third down, limit explosive plays and create enough negative plays to get opponents off schedule. Until that happens consistently, defense remains the factor most likely to prevent Lebby’s rebuilding project from taking its next step.
