East Carolina represents an interesting early test for Alabama because the Pirates are capable of making opponents work for victories. Alabama, however, possesses substantial advantages in overall talent and depth, particularly along the line of scrimmage. The Crimson Tide should attempt to establish their running game before attacking downfield as East Carolina commits additional defenders to the box. The Pirates must protect the football and prevent Alabama from creating short fields. Alabama’s defensive speed should make sustained drives difficult, particularly as the game progresses. East Carolina could remain competitive early, but Alabama should gradually take control and produce a decisive home victory.
