Towson now arrives in Columbia with the Gamecocks looking to continue building momentum.
This shouldn’t be a complicated game plan for South Carolina. Establish the line of scrimmage, run the football effectively, avoid turnovers and force Towson to sustain long drives against an SEC defense.
The most encouraging aspect of a game like this isn’t necessarily scoring 50 points. It’s seeing the Gamecocks execute consistently. Coaches will be watching missed assignments, penalties, third-down efficiency and tackling far more closely than the scoreboard.
Towson’s path to making this competitive requires South Carolina’s cooperation. The Tigers need turnovers and short fields while preventing the Gamecocks from creating explosive plays. If South Carolina protects the football, the physical mismatch should become increasingly apparent.
This is also an important depth game. The SEC schedule eventually punishes teams that depend too heavily on their first 22 players. South Carolina should have an opportunity to rotate heavily and give younger players meaningful snaps.
Special teams are another area to watch. Games against overmatched opponents can become sloppy when favorites lose concentration, and Shane Beamer has always placed considerable emphasis on special-teams execution.
Towson will compete and may find a few offensive opportunities, but sustaining drives against South Carolina’s speed is a much more difficult proposition.
The Gamecocks should be able to build an early lead, lean on their running game after halftime and keep their starters from playing deep into the fourth quarter.
